You can buy them new from Mazda. They go for around $3000, which is a discounted price (RRP is very silly). They are still available from Mazda in all the usual colours and price varies a little depending on the colour. Seeing these tops listed for that price is one thing - being able to buy them is another.

And your number appraisal is spot on. The market has gone from $3500 to $5500, to $8500 to $10,000 and that is too much. If you mean the PRHT, they don't cost any more on the used market especially for NC1s. The PRHT is more common than a soft top in well equipped models. Finding a clean GT in a soft top is far harder.
I bought a miata with an "ebay soft top" and it had a bit of a funky fit at first since the PO rarely put the top up (it was garage kept). I managed to latch it into place and then left it for a few days. It's not perfect but it's MUCH easier to line up and get closed properly now, I imagine with some more time it'll get better.

It is nicer to drive the car with the hard top than with the soft top up. The hard top is quieter, the window is bigger, and a later hard top with defroster is far superior for colder months than the plastic window of the soft top (which you canβt easily clear if it has condensation, snow or ice on it).
